Chapter 7 [Family Relationships] & lectures: (1) Describe the “continuity view” and the “discontinuity view” of how relationships are constructed. ● Continuity View: early experiences guide us on how we relate to people throughout life through models, learning early on = stable knowledge → Parent-infant relationships = special role → carry through future → Infant relations early on = become model for life → Parent-adolescent relations = predict closeness to friends and parents (positive) ● Discontinuity View: current experiences, change → How we go about determining relations = there is more to it → Each relationship has a differ structure (authority) → EX: parents has more knowledge over children = unilateral authority → Peer model - mutual influence and democratic mode → learn to compromise, be neutral (2) What are some changes in the maturation/development of the parent and of the adolescent and how might they affect the parent-adolescent relationship? ● Puberty Development → Conflict between parent and adolescents → Laurence Steinberg: at peak of puberty = rise of conflict because of Oedipus Complex. Conflict gives distance to avoid incest. → Research does not support : conflict and closeness with mom in general → Evolutionary reason is wrong because we don’t see it in all cultures ● Increased Independence → School = conflicted about being anonymous-being known or not
