The mother’s antibodies will attack the infant
• The infant experiences a lack of RBC, meaning decreased oxygen
for the infant
• Without the oxygen the heart can’t pump sufficiently it will make
the liver and spleen work overtime to produce more RBC
• Creating extra jaundice in the blood…too much jaundice can be
toxic leading to brain damage.
o If the baby is RH (+) these two CAN NOT MIX. The mother will require the
RhoGAM (IM) injection @ 28 wks o And again within 72 hours of giving birth
o This will only affect the sequent births and will require a RhoGAM injection each
pregnancy
o If mom is Rh(+) is able to tolerate it and does not require an injection
Probable signs of pregnancy o Goodell’s sign –
softening of the cervix @ 8 wks
o Chadwick's sign – bluish discoloration of cervix, vagina, or vulva @ 6-8 wks o
(+) pregnancy test
Positive signs of pregnancy o Fetal Heart Rate via
