Title: Comparison of Simple vs. Fractional Distillation for the Separation of a Binary
Mixture
Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to introduce and compare the two main types of
distillation: simple and fractional. Along with exploring each distillation type, we will
determine which method of distillation is superior in its efficiency of separating a solution
mixture.
Procedure:
Before procedure: make sure you set up your experiment under a fume hood that is
turned on, wear a protective lab coat and safety glasses during entirety of procedure
Simple Distillation Procedure
1.) Approximately 30mL of water is combined with 30mL of methanol in a 100mL round
bottom flask which will serve as the distillation pot.
2.) Boiling chips made of marble are added into the 50:50 methanol water mixture to aid
in a safe, even boil.
3.) The distillation pot containing the methanol water mixture is then clamped to the
distillation apparatus.
4.) A still head is connected to the top of the distillation pot and includes a digital
thermometer at its top.
5.) A condenser is attached to the to the still head arm and slopes downward away from
the distillation pot.
6.) Two latex tubes are attached to the two ports on the condenser- one attaches to the
facet, the other ends at the drain.
7.) Place a 100mL graduated cylinder at the bottom of the condenser to collect the
distillate.
8.) Now that the simple distillation apparatus is set up, mate the distillation pot to the
heat source underneath it but lowering it into the heat source nest.
9.) Turn on the cold water facet and confirm that the condenser’s outer shell is filling
appropriately with the cool water.
10.) Turn on the heat source.
, Chemistry Lab Report
11.) Wait for mixture in distillation pot to start boiling.
12.) Note the temperature on the digital thermometer when 2mL of distillate is noted in
the collection cylinder.
13.) Note the temperature on the thermometer at each 2mL increment on the collection
graduated cylinder until the majority of liquid has left the distillation pot and now resides
in the graduated cylinder.
14.) DO NOT allow all of the liquid to boil out of the distillation pot.
15.) Turn off the heat source and the water faucet.
