Health and Safety at SPS Technologies
, Introduction:
The following report provides an overview of my findings from a virtual visit to the SPS
Technologies focused on the Health and Safety procedures followed by SPS Technologies
in the manufacturing and testing of Aerospace Bolts.
The report meets the requirements of Unit 4 Assignment A by providing:
o A summary of the main activities carried out by the organisation.
o A summary of the potential hazards in each department selected whilst also linking
these to the health and safety measures used.
o An explanation as to why following the selected organisation’s (SPS Technologies)
specific health and safety management system improves the standard of health and
safety and allows the company to comply with legislation such as the Control of
hazardous substances and Personal Protective Equipment legislation and health and
safety policies.
o A comparison of the health and safety measures used in relation to legislation for the
two departments inspected.
o A classification of the measures taken by the organisation to ensure that high
standards of health and safety are met and that they comply with legislation.
o A brief description of the benefits and constraints of following the systems to the
employees and to the company.
Fundamental Activities of SPS Technologies:
SPS Technologies is a company that operates as part of PCC Fasteners. PCC Fasteners is
one of the world’s largest manufacturers of critical fastening systems used for aerospace
defence applications. SPS Technologies manufactures Aerospace Nuts and Bolts. These
fasteners are carefully monitored, regulated, and tested. The organisation consists of a
manufacturing area and testing facility where the fasteners are tested under laboratory
conditions to establish that they meet the requirements of the Aerospace Industry.
SPS Technologies safeguards the health and safety of its employees in both sections of the
organisation by adhering to the requirements in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and
affixed documentation provided by the Health and Safety Executive.
