A. Identify a curricular or instructional need within your school or district.
The instructional need I identified in my school is improving consistency in how teachers teach
writing. It is crucial that when we teach writing, we learn how to easily teach students how to
organize and express their ideas clearly. Across all grade levels, there is a notice that students are
struggling in their writing as they try to develop complete paragraphs, along with applying and
supporting their writing and ideas with text evidence. Teachers in my school often use different
writing strategies, which can confuse students, mainly because writing is taught differently every
year, along with other styles from their prior teachers. This can confuse students as they move
from one grade level to another.
1. Describe the existing data that helped you identify the need from part A.
I identified this need by looking at recent student writing scores and through grade-level
data discussions. Writing assessments showed that only half of our students met
grade-level expectations on opinion writing tasks. Many student samples lacked structure,
text evidence, and transition words. I also collected anecdotal data during PLC meetings,
during which several teachers shared that they did not feel confident teaching the writing
process consistently. This combination of assessment data and teacher feedback clearly
indicated the need for more support in writing instruction.
2. Discuss two specific examples of how addressing this need will improve school
effectiveness.
- Increased Student Achievement: The first would be to provide teachers with
consistent strategies for teaching writing. Students will be able to receive more
structured and practical instruction, which should lead to higher writing scores
and stronger literacy skills overall!
