, Chapter 1: Cell Structure and Function
1.1 Introduction to the Cell
DEFINITION:
The cell is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known living organisms. It is the
smallest unit of life capable of independent replication and metabolic activity.
Every living organism on Earth is composed of cells, ranging from simple unicellular microorganisms to
complex multicellular systems containing trillions of specialized cells. Within a cell, life functions are carried
out by highly organized sub-cellular molecular units called organelles, which coordinate perfectly to maintain
biological equilibrium (homeostasis).
Example: An Amoeba proteus consists of a single solitary cell that conducts ingestion, digestion, respiration,
and reproduction on its own. In contrast, the human body contains approximately 30 to 37 trillion cells,
organized into tissues, organs, and systems.
⚠️ IMPORTANT POINT: The cell is considered the "Atom of Biology." Just as an atom is the
fundamental building block of matter, a cell is the structural minimum required to exhibit all
characteristics of life.
1.2 The Cell Theory
The Cell Theory is a fundamental, globally accepted unifying principle of biology. It was developed through
centuries of microscopy advances, heavily anchored by the conclusions of German botanist Matthias
Schleiden (1838) and German zoologist Theodor Schwann (1839). Later, in 1855, Rudolf Virchow added an
essential final postulate.
The Three Core Postulates of Cell Theory:
1. Structural Unity: All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
2. Functional Unity: The cell is the fundamental, structural, and functional unit of life. All chemical metabolic
reactions of an organism occur inside its cells.
3. Biogenesis (Rudolf Virchow): New cells arise exclusively from the division of pre-existing cells via
cellular reproduction. This is formulated in Latin as: "Omnis cellula e cellula".
