, 1. The Number Tree (Quick Recalibration)
Before jumping into tough theorems, let's map out what we are dealing with. Real Numbers comprise
everything you can plot on a physical number line.
Real Numbers (R ) = Rational Numbers (Q ) + Irrational Numbers (I)
⚡ Quick Classification:
• Natural (N): Counting numbers {1, 2, 3...}
• Whole (W): Natural numbers + Zero {0, 1, 2, 3...}
• Integers (Z): Negative to positive whole counts {...-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2...}
• Rational (Q ): Any number written in p/q form, where q ≠ 0 and p, q are integers.
• Irrational (I): Numbers that cannot be written as p/q. Non-terminating, non-repeating decimals like
√2, √3, π.
📌 Topper's Alert: Is 0 rational? Yes! Because you can write 0 = 0/1. Here p=0 and q=1 (≠ 0). Don't
fall for this basic conceptual trap MCQ!
