We can look at the structure (how things fit together) and function (what each part does) Robert Merton was the major proponent of the theory Conflict theory: society is composed of groups that are in constant battle over power, prestige, and economic resources. Looks at society through the lens of competition and discord Karl Marx is the father on conflict theory Symbolic Interactionism: Views society as a collection of relationships among people with common meaning and significance Symbols are the key to understanding how we view the world & communicate 3. Society vs. Culture Society: the people and relationships that exist within a given culture and live in the same area. Culture: the norms, values, and physical elements that create the way of life 4. Difference between role and status (and achieved vs. ascribed) Status: a social position that someone occupies within a group or society Achieved Status: something we earn or become due to our efforts Ascribed Status: these are involuntary and not chosen (our sex, ethnicity, social we are raised in (parent’s class) Role: the behaviors, obligations and expectations from society attached to a status 5. Norms (folkway, more, taboo) folkways: norms not strictly enforced mores: essential to core values Taboo: any violation is repellent
