Question 1 – Geographical Description [15] marks
(a) Geographical Description of Each Site [1] mark per site
Question: Choose two (2) possible sites for the planned project and provide a geographi-
cal description of the town or city in which each determined site is located.
Answer: Site 1 – Centurion, City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality,
Gauteng
Centurion is a rapidly growing suburban and light-industrial node located approxi-
mately 40 km south of the Pretoria city centre along the N1 highway, within the City
of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng Province. It sits at an elevation of
approximately 1,320 metres above sea level. Centurion is characterised by mixed land
uses including residential estates, commercial parks, and peri-urban open spaces. It has
excellent road and rail connectivity, including the Gautrain station at Centurion, and
well-established bulk infrastructure (water, electricity, and sewerage).
Site 2 – Bronkhorstspruit, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng
Bronkhorstspruit is a small town located approximately 70 km east of Pretoria and 60
km east of Johannesburg, within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (previously
part of the former Kungwini Local Municipality). It lies at an elevation of approximately
1,445 m above sea level along the N4 highway (Maputo Corridor). Bronkhorstspruit
has a mixed agricultural and light-industrial character; it is surrounded by extensive
bushveld and smallholding farms, and the Bronkhorstspruit Dam is a prominent land-
scape feature approximately 10 km to the north.
⋆ Exam Tip
For 1 mark per site: name the town/city, its county/province, distance from a ma-
jor city, general character (industrial, agricultural, peri-urban), and approximate
elevation. One solid sentence per point earns the mark.

(b) Exact Location of Each Site (Including Maps) [3] marks
Question: Provide the exact location of each site (include a suitable map of acceptable
quality).
Answer: Site 1 – Centurion Northern Growth Edge
Proposed location: approximately 5 km north of Centurion CBD, near the Old Johan-
nesburg Road and Nelmapius Drive intersection, at coordinates approximately 25°47’S,
28°11’E. The site borders a residential estate to the south-west, an undeveloped Highveld
grassland to the north, and a commercial logistics park to the east.
Site 2 – Bronkhorstspruit Western Periphery
Proposed location: approximately 3 km west of Bronkhorstspruit town centre, off the
R25 provincial road, at approximately 25°48’S, 28°43’E. The site is adjacent to mixed
bushveld and smallholding farmland, bounded to the south by an existing light indus-
trial area and to the north by open Bankenveld savanna.
Key Concept
In an actual portfolio, insert a clear map (minimum A5 size) for each site, show-
ing site boundaries, roads, neighbouring land uses, and a north arrow with scale
bar. Use Google Maps, GIS-generated maps, or official survey maps. Coordinates
must be accurate to at least four decimal places.
