Unilateral neglect syndrome Result of damage to the parietal lobe - patients ignore all inputs coming from
one side of the body (typically right damage, so neglect is for left space)
Selective attention The skill through which a person focuses on one input or task while ignoring
other stimuli that are also on the scene.
Dichotic listening The procedure of presenting one message to the left ear and a different
message to the right ear - participants are instructed to pay attention to the
one ear - the attended channel, and ignore the message from the other ear,
the unattended channel. Physical attributes are heard. Cocktail party effect can
come into play.
Shadowing Technique where a participant is asked to repeat a word or phrase immediately
after its heard. Used in dichotic listening to ensure participants are paying
attention.
Inattentional blindness A pattern in which people fail to see a prominent stimulus, even though they're
staring straight at it.
