Chapter 1: business and management research
Methods = to refer to techniques and procedures to obtain and analyse data
Methodology = refers to the theory of how research should be undertaken
Quantitative (statistical) and qualitative (non-statistical)
Research: something that people undertake in order to find things out in a systematic way, thereby
increasing their knowledge. Number of characteristics:
- Data are collected systematically (based on logical relationships, not beliefs)
- Data are interpreted systematically
- There is a clear purpose (to find things out)
Business and management:
Trans disciplinary (meerdere stromingen)
Double hurdle (being both theoretically and methodologically rigorous)
Design science (mensen in veld helpen)
Basic, fundamental or pure research: niet direct duidelijk wat je ermee kan doen
Applied research: erg praktijk gericht, direct duidelijk
The research process: multi stage process, you will need to consider ethical and access issues during
the process. It is vital that you spend time formulating and clarifying your research topic.
Learning process as going through four stages:
1. Concrete experience
2. Observation and reflection in relation to the experience
3. Forming abstract concepts and generalisations from these observations and reflections
4. Testing these concepts and generalisations in new situations
Purpose of your research: be clear what you are doing, why you are doing it and the associated
implications of what you are seeking to do. Consider the validity and reliability of your data and
ethical and access issues.
