ATLS advanced trauma life support
ATLS incorporates - a simple systematic approach to the management of SIPs
- a method of prioritising task in emergency care
underlying principles - treat the greatest threat to life first
- indicated treatment must be applied even when a definitive diagnosis is not yet
established
- a detailed history is not necessary to begin evaluation and treatment
scribe responsible for the full record of the trauma cell (personnel, time of arrival, moi,
gcs, physical findings etc)
peaks of mortality; immediate scene of accident; disruption of major vessels, heart, lungs or body cavity
peaks of mortality; early up to hours after; pulmonary and or cardiovascular collapse
peaks of mortality; late up to weeks post trauma; sepsis and multiple organ failure
