Administrator in training-ndividual registered with the Board who serves a training period under
the supervision of a preceptor
Board-North Carolina State Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators
Nursing home-Any institution or facility defined as such for licensing purposes, whether
proprietary or nonprofit, including but not limited to nursing homes owned or administered by the
federal or Stated government or any agency or political subdivision thereof and nursing homes
operated in combination with a home for the aged or any other facility
Nursing home administrator-A person who administers, manages, supervises or is in general
administrative charge of a nursing home, whether such individual has an ownership interest in
such home and whether his functions and duties are shared with one or more individuals
Preceptor-A person who is a licensed and registered nursing home administrator and meets the
requirements of the Board to supervise administrators in training during the training period
How many members within the Board-seven
Board member criteria-1: All shall be individuals representative of the professions and
institutions concerned with care and treatment of chronically ill or infirm elderly patients
2: Less than a majority of the Board members shall be representative of a single profession or
institutional category
3: Three of the Board members shall be licensed nursing home administrators, at list one of
whole shall be employed by a for profit nursing home and at least one of whom shall be
employed by a nonprofit nursing home. These three Board members shall be considered as
representatives of institutions in construing this section
4: Four of the Board members shall be public, noninstitutional members, with no direct financial
interest in nursing homes
5: The terms of the Board members shall be limited to two consecutive terms
, How long is a term on the Board-Three years?
Qualifications of NHA license-1: 18 years of age, of good moral character and of sound physical
and mental health
2: Has successfully completed the equivalent of two years of college level study from an
accredited community college, college or university prior to application
OR
Has completed a combination of education and experience, acceptable under rules promulgated
by the Board, prior to application of licensure. Under this provision, two years of supervisory
experience in a nursing home shall be equated to one year of college study
3: Has satisfactorily completed a course prescribed by the Board, which course contains
instruction on the services provided by nursing homes, laws governing nursing homes,
protection of patient interests and nursing home administration
4: Has successfully completed the training period as an AIT as prescribed by the board. If the
person has served at least 12 weeks as a hospital administrator or assistant administrator of a a
hospital based long term care nursing unity or hospital-based swing beds, the Board shall
consider this experience comparable to the initial on the job portion of the AIT program only
5: Has passed the national and State examinations designed to test for competence in the
subject matters referred to in sub-subdivision c within one year from the date of completion of
the AIT program

Collection of funds-Monies/fees collected by the Board shall be handled by the State Treasurer.
Funds are used by the Board to pay the compensation and travel expenses of members and
employees of the Board and other expenses necessary for the Board to administer and carry
out the provisions of this article
