, Week 6: Endocrine System Part 1 Worksheet
1. What are some of the general functions of the endocrine system?
Organ functions
Controls moods
Growth
Metabolism
Production
Sleep
2. What is the difference between primary and secondary endocrine structures? Give examples of
each:
The primary endocrine organs are in charge of hormone secretion, and secondary endocrine organs are
many different processes, including secreting hormones and supporting and maintaining their primary
functions.
Primary endocrine organs are the ovaries, male testes, pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands.
Secondary endocrine organs are the heart, GI tract, kidneys, tissues, skin and etc.
3. What are the two different classifications of hormones?
There the protein hormones made from amino acids, like the antidiuretic hormone that lowers blood
pressure. Then there are steroid hormones that come from lipids; for example, testosterone and
estrogen.
4. What are the three different ways we control the secretion of hormones?
Humoral stimuli that control hormone release due to changes in extracellular fluids
Hormonal stimuli are the release of a hormone in repose to another hormone
Neural stimuli, the nervous system directly stimulates the endocrine glands to release hormones
5. How does the anterior pituitary gland attach to the hypothalamus? How does the posterior
pituitary?
The posterior pituitary is connected by a bridge of nerve axons, which is how the hypothalamus
sends hormones. The anterior pituitary is connected by a stalk of blood vessels
