, Exam 6: Endocrine
1. Explain two reasons why a woman with low levels of LH would
not be able to become pregnant.
1. Lack of ovulation: Luteinizing hormone is crucial for triggering
ovulation. If LH levels are too low, ovulation may not occur, meaning
no egg is available for fertilization (preventing pregnancy)
2. Inability to support corpus luteum function: After ovulation, LH
helps maintain the corpus luteum which secretes progesterone to
prepare the uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized egg. Low LH
levels may result in insufficient progesterone production, making it
difficult for a fertilized egg to implant and thrive in uterus (hindering
pregnancy)
2. Would you expect a male to have estrogen in their bloodstream?
Explain why or why not.
Yes. Both male and female bodies produce all the sex hormones. However,
the ratios are different. The adrenal glands are largely responsible for
producing this “opposite” hormone that the testes would not.
3. In addition to the endocrine system, the pancreas is also part of
which system?
