DR.MARGARETW.MATLIN’S COURSE j j j j
My syllabus changes somewhat from one semester to the next, but the syllabus
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
below is the version I used in Fall Semester, 2010. (However, the textbook
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
for that course was the 6th edition.) I think it’s important for a syllabus to
j j j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
include a brief description of the course, as well as the goals. From the first
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
page of the syllabus, students should be able to understand the general scope of
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j j j
the course.

You can find several additional syllabi for courses on the Psychology of Women

topic “Women and Gender.”

Additional note: Psychology of Women Quarterly now includes a “Teaching

Section” in each issue. It features between one and three short articles in each
j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
issue, which focus on topics related to women and gender, such as critical

thinking, social class, social justice advocacy. I am the current editor of this

about a potential article related to this teaching!

On the first day of class, students also receive a description of the Psychology

document you can find a description of this project, as well as some details

COURSE DESCRIPTION j j
The purpose of this course is to examine the lives of girls and women. We
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
will include topics such as gender stereotypes, the development of gender roles,
j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
gender comparisons, women and work, love relationships, sexuality, women’s
j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j
physical and mental health, violence against women, and women in later
j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j
adulthood. Students who take this course should acquire a better understanding
j j j j j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j j j
about girls, women, and gender in North America.
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
As the course instructor, I’m hopeful that each of you will work toward the following
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
goals:
j j
1. To understand the relevant information about the lives of girls and
j j j j jj j j j j jj j j j j j j j j
women—as well as gender—with a particular emphasis on the
j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
complexity of the issues.
j j j j j j j j
2. To develop critical-thinking skills, so that you can evaluate both the
j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j jj j j
research in professional journals and information described in the
jj j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j
popular media.
j j j j
3. To know how to design your own psychology research project, to conduct
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
the research, and to write an appropriately professional summary of your
j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
own research, emphasizing the potential methodological flaws and strengths
j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j
in your study.
j j j j j j
4. To explore your own ideas and attitudes about gender, appreciating that we do
j j jj j j j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j jj
not need to be constrained by our culture’s traditional gender roles.
j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
5. To appreciate the inequalities that many individuals face, based on social
j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
categories other than gender. These categories include age, disability,
j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, social class, and country of residence.
j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j j j j j
We will also consider some information about inequalities in other
j j j j j j j j jj j j j j j j j j j j
cultures, outside North America.
