SECTION A - KNOWLEDGE-BASED QUESTIONS

1) Communication skills fall into two categories. Name these categories.

 The two categories of communication skills are receptive skills and productive skills
(ENG1514, p. 103; Wyse et al., 2024, p. 14).

2) Using the module study guide as a reference, identify the parts of our body we use to make
sounds.

 According to the study guide, when we produce language, we use the lungs, the vocal tract,
vocal chords, tongue, teeth, and lips (ENG1514, p. 105; Wyse et al., 2024, p. 4).

3) Provide one example of structured verbal communication.

 A structured verbal communication is a speech delivered by a president (ENG1514, p. 105).

4) Nunan, 2001:23 identifies six stages in the listening process. In your own words, summarise
each stage in one sentence.

 Hearing: This initial stage is the physical response of the ears to sound waves, without the
requirement of active focus (ENG1514, p. 105).

 Attending: This stage involves the brain selecting and paying attention to specific sounds from
the multitude that are heard (ENG1514, p. 105).

 Understanding: In this stage, the listener examines the attended sounds and messages to
interpret and make logical sense of them (ENG1514, p. 106).

 Remembering: This is the critical process of storing the understood message in the mind for
future retrieval and use (ENG1514, p. 106).

 Evaluating: During this stage, the listener critically appraises the received message and the
speaker's intent, separating fact from opinion (ENG1514, p. 106).

 Responding: The final stage completes the communication loop by providing the speaker with
verbal or non-verbal feedback to show the message was received (ENG1514, p. 106).

5) Briefly explain what you understand by the phrase “reading has a visual aspect”.

The phrase "reading has a visual aspect" means that the act of reading requires understanding visual
symbols or images (such as letters and words) and how these symbols represent sounds and create
meaning (ENG1514, p. 120; Wyse et al., 2024, p. 2).

6) What two methods can be used to test factual retention of texts?

Two methods to test factual retention of texts are quizzes and comprehension tests (ENG1514, p. 131;
Bailey, 2015, p. 93).
