Lab report 9 chem 2021
Introduction This experiment was designed to predict the molecular structure of an unknown compound. The compound of interest could have had a broad range of functional groups ranging from alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and aromatic side groups. However, based on series of qualitative testing and the spectroscopic data of the compound, one can confirm or rule out its specific functional groups. More specifically, qualitative tests were done first and consisted of chemically reacting the compound of interest with certain reagents to test for the presence or absence of specific functional groups. In other words, the reagents used is meant to specifically react with certain functional group resulting in a positive test or a negative test. These tests consisted of the DNPH derivatization test, CrO3 test, Iodoform test, Lucas test, and Urethane derivative test. Furthermore, data analysis via the use of spectroscopy and spectrometry was also used to accurately predict the structure of the unknown compound
