Be able to provide a definition of sustainability. (we Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without
started out our first few days talking about compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It
this in January). means to live within your needs like using resources (water, energy, land,
and materials) at a rate that can be maintained over time, without
depleting them or causing long-term harm. Sustainability means not using
resources faster than they can naturally regenerate. Not producing waste
faster than ecosystems can absorb or break it down. Making decisions that
don't shift environmental or social costs onto future generations or other
communities.

What are the three pillars of sustainability? The three pillars of sustainability are environmental, social, and economic.
Environmental sustainability focuses on protecting natural systems and
resources. Ex. reducing pollution and waste, conserving biodiversity, using
renewable resources responsibly, and addressing climate change.
Social sustainability focuses on people, communities, and quality of life.
Ex. Equity and fairness, access to basic needs like clean water, food,
healthcare, and education. Human rights and safe working conditions.
Strong, resilient communities.
Economic sustainability focuses on systems that support long-term
economic stability. Ex. Jobs and livelihoods, efficient use of resources to
avoid wasteful spending, businesses that can operate without depleting
environmental or social systems, balancing profit with responsibility.
A system is only truly sustainable if it balances all three.

Working for sustainability takes many forms, from I believe it it's very unlikely that sustainability can be achieved solely on
personal lifestyle choices to activism to policies and individual efforts. Don't get me wrong, Individual responsibility does
laws. How likely do you think it is that sustainability matter. Choices like reducing waste, eating less resource-intensive foods,
can be achieved solely by Individuals taking using public transportation, or conserving energy can collectively reduce
responsibility without the addition of systemic environmental impact and also signal demand for greener products and
changes? practices. These actions can also shift cultural norms over time, which is
important.
However, the scale of the sustainability problem is largely shaped by
systems—energy grids, transportation infrastructure, agriculture,
manufacturing, and policy frameworks. These systems determine what
choices are realistically available and affordable. For example, it’s hard for
individuals to reduce carbon emissions significantly if their city lacks
public transit, if renewable energy isn’t accessible, or if industries are still
heavily fossil-fuel dependent.
