I am currently teaching at a semi-urban government secondary school in a township on
the outskirts of a major city in Gauteng. The school serves a diverse community where
many households face socio-economic challenges, including high unemployment rates
and a reliance on informal trading for income. The learner population is predominantly
from Black African backgrounds, with isiZulu and English as the primary languages of
learning and teaching.
In terms of available resources, the school faces typical challenges of a no-fee
institution. There is one computer laboratory with 30 functional computers for a school
of 1,200 learners, making access for a full class difficult. The school has a data
projector and internet connectivity in the staff room, but not in every classroom.
