Things They Carried by Tim O’ Brien
The Things They Carried was written in 1990 by Tim O’Brien. The short story presents a
detailed description of Tim O’Brien time in the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was a terrible
time in the history of America. Many young men sent as soldiers in Vietnam where they lost
their lives ( SparkNotes, 2020). Also, many others were wounded. The soldiers many objects
with them which they determined were necessary for their comfort and survival. Some of the
symbols or objects carried by the soldiers identifies with me. Symbols such wristwatches,
mosquito repellent, laptop, dog tags, purse, and scars. They all play significant roles in my life.
Also, they reveal important much about my life.
Wristwatches are important to me because they allow for checking of time easily.
Sometimes, it is too challenging to search my purse to get the cellphone so I can see the time.
My purse is often filled with a lot of items. Also, on many occasions’ passersby stopped and
asked the time. Wristwatches are very important especially when I have a doctor’s appointment
or business meetings. I have several wristwatches that I rotate throughout the week. However, I
have a favorite one which is black in color. It is my favorite because it goes with almost any type
or color of clothing.
Everywhere I go my mosquito repellent is with me. My skin is very sensitive to mosquito
bites. Whenever a mosquito bites me, it itches and leave dark spots. Mosquitoes are known for
causing diseases. I used the repellent as a form of protection. I use it especially when I am
outdoor. I have a mosquito repellent in my handbag at all times.
