Preproduction stage of language acquisition Lacks vocabulary and comprehension, sometimes silent, relies on nonverbal
communication. Frustration and anxiety.
-Observe Peers & rely heavily on pictures and objects to communicate and
comprehend
Early production stage of language acquisition Students speak using one or two words or short phrases. Lessons expand
receptive vocabulary. Activities are designed to activate students to produce
vocabulary which they already understand. Students can: listen, point, select,
move, mime, act, match, circle, draw, choose, group, gesture, label, list, and
categorize. (6 months)
Speech emergence stage of language acquisition During this stage, students will use short sentences and make more attempts
to communicate complete thoughts. Participate in everyday conversations.
Students can show understanding by: using three word phrases, using
complete sentences, engaging in extended discourse. The errors they make,
not receptive and productive, often interfere with comprehension. (1 year)
Intermediate fluency stage of language acquisition learners are able to speak in more complex sentences and catch and correct
many of their errors
-Mistakes don't hinder comprehension
-Students begin to participate in literacy activities in the classroom, and use
strategies to conduct meaning from the printed page
