CORRECT ANSWERS
System
The four phases of the Corrective Exercise Continuum are an organized science and
evidence-based model in which individual components (inhibit, lengthen, activate,
integrate) work together to improve human movement. It is the foundation for all
corrective programs.
Solutions and strategies
Solutions are answers to a problem. With respect to corrective exercise, the problem to
be solved is the presence of observable movement impairments and compensation
resulting from muscle imbalance.
The solution is the high-level understanding of the client's needs using the four phases
of the Corrective Exercise Continuum. Recommendations are created based on the
probable overactive and underactive muscles associated with each movement
impairment. The Corrective Exercise Specialist will identify which tissues to address
within each phase of the continuum.
scapular winging
scapular control, activation of the serratus anterior, reduction in pectoralis minor
overactivity, and integrated motion of the scapulae and upper extremities all become
priorities to be addressed in a program.
strategy
is the translation of a solution into a goal-directed plan; in other words, it is how the
Corrective Exercise Specialist transforms recommended solutions into corrective
programs for their clients. This requires an understanding of not only the needs of one
segment of the kinetic chain, but also how the segments interrelate, along with client
preferences, adherence level, abilities, and needs.
Techniques:
, Techniques are technical skills or specific methods used to accomplish particular
outcomes. In corrective exercise, specific techniques are best suited to accomplish the
intended outcome of each phase of the Corrective Exercise Continuum:
Corrective Exercise Continuum
Inhibit: Myofascial techniques such as foam rolling and local muscle vibration
Lengthen: Static, neuromuscular, or dynamic stretching
Activate: Isolated strengthening exercises
Integrate: Integrated dynamic movements
tools/ modalities appropriate for each phase of the Corrective Exercise Continuum:
Inhibit: Foam roller, roller ball, muscle vibration device, etc.
Lengthen: Stretch strap, elastic resistance band, stretching stick
Activate: Resistance cables, resistance machines, elastic resistance tubes/bands,
dumbbells, kettlebells, stability balls, medicine balls
Integrate: Body weight, resistance machines, dumbbells, kettlebells, stability balls,
medicine balls
Tactics: Tactics are the art or skill of employing available means to accomplish an end;
essentially, it is how one supports and encourages the client to actually perform their
scheduled program.
