Newborn/Infant
Reflexes
• Need to know page 9 on slide – Reflexes
• Rooting – Infant’s head turns, and they begin to suck when the cheek or lower lip is
stroked
, lOMoAR cPSD| 67691079
• Sucking – sucking motion of lips, mouth, and tongue allows the infant to take in
sustenance
• Palmar and Plantar Grasp – When the palms of the hands or soles of the feet are
stroked, causing fingers or toes to curl inward
• Moro - “Startle” response with sudden jarring causes extension of the head. The feeling
of falling, arms and legs extend out and hands form a C
• Babinski - the turning in of the foot and fanning out of the toes, when the sole of the
foot is stroked. Goes away at 18 months (EX: 2 year old, you should not see a Babinski
reflex)
Physical Development

• Triple the birthweight at 1 year
• You’re not supposed to put a kid on a bed and prop up their head with pillows

Sometimes children will say words that are not exactly what they are called, but as long as the
parent knows what they mean you do not need to put in a referral
Toddler Temper Tantrum (page 12) *important
• Stay with child so they are safe, do not leave them alone
• Remove them from the situation
• Time Outs = 1 minute per year or age
Pre-School
• Fine motor- they learn how to tie their shoes
• This is the group that asks you “Why” questions
• Doesn’t make a difference if the child is articulating the words correctly as long as the
parent knows what they’re saying
• Magical thinking o Nightmares – bad dream
o Night terror – you can’t wake them up, sometimes they’ll sleep walk or scream
hysterically, and child remembers nothing. Children do tend to outgrow this
School Age
• Tannering: staging of the breast and pubic area of children, goes from
1 to 5 with 5 being fully developed man or woman
