MIP2602 Assignment 3 Semester 1 2026 - Due 26 June 2026 MIP2602/102/0/2026 SECTION A: FOUNDATIONS OF PROBABILITY (37 MARKS) Question 1: Basic Understanding (13 marks) A bag contains: 3 red, 4 blue, 2 green, and 1 yellow marble. 1.1 Write down the theoretical probability of selecting each colour. (4) 1.1.1 What is the probability of selecting an orange marble? (2) 1.2 Without calculating, rank the colours from most likely to least likely and justify your reasoning. (3) 1.3 A Grade 6 learner says, “The probability of selecting a blue marble is 4.” Explain why this statement is incorrect. Describe how you would help the learner understand probability values using this marble activity. (4) Question 2: Events and Reasoning (11 marks) The word STATISTICS is used. 2.1 A learner says, “The probability of selecting S is high because S appears many times.” Do you agree? Explain using probability reasoning. (4) 2.2 Compare the likelihood of selecting a vowel and a consonant. Which outcome is more likely? Explain your reasoning using probability ideas, not only the number of letters. (3) 2.3 A learner says: “A vowel and a consonant have the same chance of being selected from the word STATISTICS.” Explain how you would help the learner determine whether the statement is correct. Include one teaching strategy or classroom activity in your answer. (4) Question 3: Compound Probability (13 marks) A jar contains 4 red, 5 yellow, and 6 blue marbles. Two marbles are drawn with replacement. 3.1 Calculate the probability that both marbles are yellow. (3) 3.2 Explain why “with replacement” affects the probability calculation. (3) 3.3 A Grade 6 learner says: “The probability stays the same even if the marble is not replaced.” Explain whether the learner is correct. (4) 3.4 Describe one classroom activity you would use to help Grade 6 learners understand the difference between ‘with replacement’ and ‘without replacement’. (3)
