WHISPERBOUND – PHYSICS REVISION NOTES SERIES
, BASIC DEFINITIONS
Rest: Object is at rest if its position does not
change with time.
Motion: Object is in motion if its position changes
with time.
Distance: Total path length travelled by an object.
(Scalar quantity)
Displacement: Shortest straight-line distance from
initial to final position. (Vector quantity)
Speed: Rate of change of distance.
Speed = Distance / Time
Velocity: Rate of change of displacement.
Velocity = Displacement / Time
Acceleration: Rate of change of velocity.
Acceleration = (Final velocity - Initial velocity) /
Time
a = (v - u) / t
