Balance system A biological system that enables us to know where our bodies are in
space and to maintain a desired position
What is balance Balance is a complex motor control task which involves the detection
and integration of sensory information to assess the position and motion
of the body in space
Center of Mass (COM) Point that corresponds to the center of the total body mass and is the
point where the body is in perfect equilibrium
Center of Gravity (COG) Vertical projection of the center of mass to the ground. In anatomical
position the COG of most adults is located slightly anterior to the second
sacral vertebra.
Base of Support (BOS) Perimeter of the contact area between the body and it's support surface.
Foot placement will alter this. A wide stance will increase stability,
whereas a narrow stance will reduce it.
Limits of Stability (LOS) The maximum distance a person can displace their COG while still
maintaining equilibrium without changing his/her base of support. LOS
testing is used to detect motor control abnormalities.
