NUR 436 Midterm Exam with Questions and Answers Endotracheal suctioning in adults needed approximately: ANSWER - every 2 hours, PRN - 120-150 mm Hg, 100-120 mm HG Endotracheal suctioning in adults: Routine hyperoxygenation ANSWER not recommended but if it is indicated then do it for 30 seconds, pause the vent alarms How to suction (endotracheal) in adults: ANSWER Suction only on the way out, wait until the pt. inhales then insert the catheter - 1/2 inch/1 cm beyond ET tube length. Withdraw over 10 seconds applying suction continuously and rotating the catheter to remove secretions that have adhered to the sides of the ET tube - Repeat steps to 2-4 times to clear secretions - Adequate humidification is essential to decrease thickness of secretions - Allow adequate time between passes, One minute between passes - Return of O2 sat to baseline - No more than 2-4 passes at a time - Open the saline port and rinse the catheter use continuous suctioning, saline is NOT recommended to be instilled down the ET tube - apply intermittent suction no longer than 10 seconds
