The type of research I will be doing is an applied research study to create a professional
development program. This professional development program will provide teachers with a
better understanding of kindergarten readiness.
Research Topic
The topic of understanding kindergarten readiness aligns with the curriculum and
instruction because if teachers were supplied the correct tools, training, and information about
what that looks like and how they can better support their students they are able to help their
students succeed more, as well as become better educators for themselves. By creating a
professional development program to assist teachers with this dilemma this will help solve the
issue of lack of preparedness of what kindergarten readiness looks like.
This topic is important to the field of curriculum and instruction because teachers need to
be given the proper tools and equipment to support their students. If they do not know how they
can fully support their students they will not be able to help them succeed. Kindergarten is the
foundation for all other levels of learning. Teachers may be missing out on crucial steps to help
students in future grades if they do not fully prepare them for kindergarten. “Lower levels of
kindergarten readiness are associated with poorer academic outcomes from elementary to high
school.” This is why kindergarten readiness is so important for children, not only does it help
them succeed in kindergarten, but in all the other grades above. (National Academies of
Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. (2019). School readiness is typically thought of as a set of
