Human Reproduction: Basic Characteristics
• Definition: Reproduction is the production of offspring to ensure the continuity of generation.
• Humans are sexually reproducing: It involves two parents producing gametes. The male gamete (sperm)
and female gamete (ova/egg) fuse to form a zygote.
• Humans are viviparous: They directly give birth to young ones.
Sequential Events Involved in Human Reproduction
1. Gametogenesis
The process of formation or production of gametes.
• Spermatogenesis: Formation of sperms in males.
• Oogenesis: Formation of ova in females.
2. Insemination
Transfer of sperm into the female reproductive tract.
3. Fertilisation
Fusion of male and female gametes. Humans undergo internal fertilisation (fertilisation occurs inside
the body).
