A. Complete the VIA Character Strengths Survey using the “VIA Character
Strengths Survey” web link, and use the results of the survey to complete the
following:
1. Describe an experience in which you used one of your five signature
strengths (i.e., the first five) from the survey results to overcome a
challenge.
The survey gave me hope as one of my top 5 strengths. Hope, by this
definition, has been a driving force in my life and business endeavors. I
always believe where there’s a will, there’s a way. When we built our
business back in 1998, the cattle business was in a downturn. Everything
goes on a cycle, as we all know, so I pushed my husband to let’s go out on
a limb and finance the business. We didn’t have any cash built up, but he
was a fantastic public relations man, and I was savvy with financing and
budgeting. By the time we opened in January of 1999, the market was
turning, and after a couple of months, we were making a steady return, and
the growth continued for many years. Believing that we could make it
happen when friends and colleagues were naysayers turned out to be the
best decision of our lives.
a. Explain how you could apply the strength identified in part A1 as a
values-based leader in your new position as the customer service
manager from the scenario.
I would choose the new customer service manager based on experience
and performance ratings. The strength of hope would be used to lead by
example. Typically, people know who is the most qualified, even if they
prefer it to be themselves. If a decision is made in fairness, and I lead with
an example of hope, the friend group and others will know that if they put
