The cell spends 95% of it's time in interphase where it is prepared for division
Cells leave the cell cycle permanently due to:
• Di erentiation - specialised ce s cannot divide and so leave the ce cycle permanentl
• DNA damage - damaged ce s cannot divide as they aren't viable for replication and so
permanently leave the ce cycl
• Age - ce s can divide a maximum number of times. These ce s become senescent (dormant) and
can be linked to age related i nesses E.G. Arthritis and cancer
