Psychology is the scientific approach to understanding people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It's
the study of behavior and mental processes.
Myths about psychology - should discuss some aspect of the scientific method and how it
addresses the myth.
Behavioral Psychology
Study human behavior, focusing on the process of learning and motivation.
Focuses on observable stimulus-response behaviors.
Clinical Psychology
Focuses on mental health and illness
Sociocultural Psychology
Examine the social and cultural contexts of human thought and behavior
Cognitive Psychology
Study human thought, topics include intelligence and memory.
Biological Psychology
Focus on how the body is linked to thought and behavior, they solely look to physical sources.
Developmental Psychology
Focuses on the physical, emotional, and social changes that people undertake throughout their
lives.
Bio-psycho-social model - holistic approach to understanding our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Pavlov and Skinner were behaviorists and learned about behaviors through direct observation
Freud and Jung became more interested in unconscious mental processes.
Why is it important that psychology has a scientific foundation?
Humans are biased processors, and science provides a more careful way to understand human mental
functioning and behavior.
People believe myths and create them because of bias, research can help dispel these false beliefs.
Confirmation bias - people seek out information that confirms what you believe
Hindsight bias - we believe we could've predicted the outcome
Psychologists are able to use the scientific method to better understand human thoughts and behaviors.
