Physical examination of skin, hair, nails NURS 5334 Hair findings Exposure to hair products containing bleach cause abnormally coarse or brittle hair. Dull, coarse hair can indicate nutritional deficiencies, hypo or hyperthyroidism. Nits at base of hair shaft-head lice. Alopecia (hair loss) may occur with autoimmune disorders, anemia, nutritional def, radiation, or antineoplastic agents. Hair loss on legs-poor peripheral perfusion. Female pubic hair-inverse triangle. Scalp moves easily over skull. No flaking, scaling, redness, lesions. Denies pain during palpation. Hirsutism In women-hair growth in male distribution pattern. Sign of endocrine disorder. Abnormal pubic hair may indicate hormonal inbalance. Skin Note color and tone (uniform). Hyperpigmentation may occur during pregnancy. Unexpected: 1) Cyanosis (blue or purple color from oxygen deprivation). 2) Pallor (pale color on skin). 3) Jaundice (yellowish appearance). 4) Hypopigmentation (loss of skin color). 5) Hyperpigmentation- associated with pituitary, adrenal/endocrine disorders, SLR. 6) Vitiligo- unpigmented patch, associated with autoimmune disorders.
