Parts 1, 2 & 3 — Complete Guide
Full Model Answers · Examiner Tips · Band 9 Vocabulary
Introduction
The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. It lasts
between 11 and 14 minutes and is divided into three distinct parts. Each part tests a
different aspect of your spoken English, and together they give examiners a full picture of
your ability to communicate in real-life situations.
This guide provides complete Band 9 model answers for all three parts of the test. Every
answer is written at the highest standard, with explanations of why each response scores
full marks. Whether you are aiming for Band 7, 8, or 9, studying these examples will
sharpen your vocabulary, improve your sentence structures, and show you exactly what
examiners are looking for.
Understanding the Band Scores

well

words

Grammatical Range & Use complex sentence structures with minimal errors

Part 1 — Introduction & Interview
Part 1 lasts 4 to 5 minutes. The examiner introduces themselves and asks you to confirm
your identity. They then ask general questions about familiar topics such as your home,
work or studies, hobbies, and daily routines. These questions are designed to be accessible
— the examiner is warming you up and assessing your ability to speak naturally about
yourself.
A Band 9 response in Part 1 is conversational, fluent, and naturally extended. You should
not give one-word answers. Equally, you should not over-explain. Aim for 2 to 4 sentences
per answer, using a variety of vocabulary and at least one complex sentence structure.
Topic 1: Hometown & Where You Live
Q: Where are you from?
I'm originally from Lahore, which is one of Pakistan's most historically rich cities —
it's famous for its Mughal architecture, its food, and its incredibly vibrant cultural
scene. I've lived there my whole life, and honestly, despite its noise and traffic, I find it
a deeply exciting place to be. There's always something happening.
Q: Do you like living there?
For the most part, yes. What I particularly appreciate is the sense of community —
people in Lahore are genuinely warm and hospitable, and there's a social energy to
the city that's hard to find elsewhere. That said, the traffic congestion can be
genuinely exhausting, and I do sometimes wish the city had better green spaces. It's a
trade-off, I suppose.
Q: Has your hometown changed much in recent years?
Dramatically, actually. When I was a child, the area where I grew up was relatively
quiet and residential. These days, it has been transformed into a commercial hub with
shopping centres, restaurants, and apartment blocks everywhere. In some ways it's
more convenient, but I do feel a certain nostalgia for the slower, quieter version of the
neighbourhood I remember.
