Relationships
Course: PSY-205 (Gender Issues in Psychology) Topic: Changes in Values, Economics, and
Employment
1. Introduction: What is the "New" Concept?
● The Traditional Past: In the past, gender roles were strictly fixed. Men were only
"Breadwinners" and women were only "Homemakers".
● The Modern Shift: Today, due to education and modern times, these old roles are
changing. This change has given rise to the concepts of the "New Woman" and the
"New Man", which are reshaping modern relationships.
2. Changes in Employment
Employment is the biggest reason behind the changing roles of men and women:
● Rise of Working Women: Today, millions of women are highly educated and working in
top positions (like corporate offices, banks, politics, and technology). They are no longer
locked inside houses.
● Economic Independence: When women earn their own money, they become financially
independent. They do not have to depend on a father or husband for every small financial
need.
● Shifting Workplace Values: Workplaces are also changing. Companies are now
introducing women-friendly policies like maternity leaves, equal pay rules, and flexible
working hours.
3. Changes in Economics
Financial realities have completely changed how a modern family runs:
● The Dual-Earner Family: In modern times, inflation is very high. It is now very difficult to
run a happy house on just one person's salary. Therefore, both husband and wife must
work together to support the family financially.
● Shared Financial Power: Because women are also bringing money to the house, they
now have equal power in financial decision-making (e.g., buying a house, children's
school choice, or investments). The man is no longer the sole "boss" of financial
decisions.
4. Changes in Societal Values
As employment and economic conditions changed, the traditional thinking (values) of society
also evolved:
