CHAPTER 1
Introduction: Why Exam Technique Matters
Understanding the system is half the battle
Every year, students who know their chemistry inside out walk out of the exam hall disappointed. The reason is
almost never a lack of knowledge — it is a lack of exam technique. Edexcel marks your paper in a very specific
way, and understanding that system can be the difference between a grade B and a grade A*.
How Edexcel Marks Your Paper
Edexcel Chemistry A-level is assessed across three papers. Papers 1 and 2 each carry 30% of your final grade
and Paper 3 carries 40%. Every mark scheme is written before the exams are sat, meaning the examiner has a
list of precise accepted answers. Your job is to match your response as closely as possible to that list.
KEY Examiners are not looking for your best writing — they are looking for specific chemical ideas expressed
TRUTH precisely. One correct point can earn a mark even inside an otherwise weak paragraph.
The Four Assessment Objectives
Every question on the paper maps to one of four assessment objectives (AOs). Knowing which AO a question
targets tells you exactly what style of answer is required.
AO What it Means Typical Question Trigger
AO1 Recall, select and communicate State, define, give, name, identify
knowledge and understanding of
chemistry
AO2 Apply knowledge and understanding of Explain, predict, describe, suggest,
chemistry calculate
AO3 Analyse, interpret and evaluate Evaluate, justify, assess, discuss,
scientific information compare
AO Practical Use and apply practical skills Plan, describe a method, analyse data,
identify errors
Using This Guide Effectively
Each chapter focuses on one question type. For each type, you will learn: what the examiner is looking for, the
common mistakes students make, a worked example with a model answer, and a checklist to use in the exam.
Work through each chapter in order the first time, then return to individual chapters for targeted practice.
