Part 1: Understanding the IELTS Reading Test
The IELTS Reading test consists of three passages with a total of 40 questions, and you
have 60 minutes to complete the entire test — including transferring your answers. Unlike
Listening, no extra time is given for transferring answers, so this must be factored into your
time management.

3 long passages from books, journals, and Section 1: Short factual texts (notices,
magazines advertisements, timetables)
Texts are typically more abstract and Section 2: Workplace-related texts (job
academic in style descriptions, contracts, training materials)
Increasing difficulty across the three Section 3: A longer, more complex text similar
passages in style to Academic passages
Common in topics: science, history, Common in topics: everyday life, work, and
environment, psychology study in an English-speaking country
The 11 Question Types
Across both versions of the test, questions are drawn from eleven possible types. A single
passage may contain two or three different question types. Mastering the specific strategy
for each type — covered in Part 5 — is the single most effective way to improve your score.

💡 Exam Tip
The Reading test rewards STRATEGY more than raw vocabulary knowledge. A student
with a Band 7 vocabulary who uses the right techniques can outscore a student with a
Band 9 vocabulary who reads passages from start to finish like a novel. This guide
