In the 19th century, the camera was a revolutionary invention, and many artists were concerned about the effect that photographs would have on the art world. • Did the invention of the camera change the arts? Why or why not? • Choose an artistic movement that you believe was influenced by the camera and discuss how the movement was affected. • Include a statement from a current photographer or critic to support your points. • Include at least one example of an artist and artwork in your response. The invention of Camera added a great value as an evidence and proof to important and/or disastrous events. How did it not change art? Cameras can capture images that painting cannot. It’s an in the moment type of situation vs a sit still and hope the scenery doesn’t change soon situation. The images are more accurate because they are happening at the moment. Moreover, pictorialism and straight photography both emerged in the second half of the 19th century and were basically two opposing views on what photography should be and what it should look like. Straight photography supported the idea that photography should be a simple, direct depiction of reality, while pictorialism suggested that photography should be used more artistically [ CITATION Art18 l 1033 ]. According to our textbook, “the pictorialist photograph was usually soft in focus, centrally weighted, and carefully balanced symmetrically (Jacobus & Martin, 2018).” British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron was another well-known 19th century photographers who staged and manually manipulated her photographs, creating symbolic or allegorical scenes such as Parting of Sir Lancelot and Queen Guinevere (1874). She would, for example, make deliberate “mistakes” like having prolonged exposure or a slightly out-of-focus lens to get the effects she needed [ CITATION Art18 l 1033 ]. According to a critic, Julia Margaret “made use of large photographic plates, dark backgrounds, and subdued lighting and she required her models to sit for a long time. Her photographs may lack sharpness but their dreamy, emotional, and sometimes almost spiritual, mood compromised the efforts and sacrifices made in order to yield such fancy portraits [ CITATION Lom19 l 1033 ].”
