● Burette. Answer: Glassware that measures volume in milliliters (mL),
numbers are in the opposite direction (0 at the top, 100 at the bottom),
used for titration, read to the hundredths place.


● Erlenmeyer Flask. Answer: Glassware that is usually used for titration
collection due to its lack of spilling.


● Volumetric Flask. Answer: Glassware that is calibrated to a specific
volume, usually used for dilutions.


● Volumetric Pipette. Answer: Glassware that allows for precise
measurements of volume (up to 4 sig figs), used with a large bulb.


● 10% Rule. Answer: Determines how accurately we can read an
instrument, The uncertainty in the instrument is 10% of the smallest
divisions.
e.g. Since 10% of 0.2 is 0.02, we should read this instrument to the
nearest 0.02 mL and report our answer as ± 0.02 mL.

● Percent Error. Answer: Determines the precision of calculations
performed in the experiment.


● Chromatography Paper. Answer: A separation method which exploits
molecular structure . Some molecules will be more attracted to the
surface than others and therefor capillaries of the paper will push
pigments upwards.


● Filtration. Answer: A separation method that exploits phase state or
particle size. Often used to separate a solution of solids from liquids.
e.g. salt and sand mixture


● Distillation. Answer: A separation method that exploits differences in
boiling point. When a mixture is heated, the lower boiling substance will
boil off (become a vapor) first leaving behind the higher boiling
substance(s). The vapor must be recondensed and allowed to collect in a
separate container.
e.g. water, copper (II) sulfate and dirtB


● Magnetism. Answer: A separation method in which components of a
mixture may be separated by using a magnet if one of the substances is
attracted to the magnet and the other is not.
e.g. iron filings from powdered sulfur
