Cancer
Cancer is the replication of abnormal cells in the body and has the potential to spread. Cancer cells can be
categorized as either benign (non-cancerous) where it grows very slowly and does not spread to other parts of the body,
malignant (cancerous) can grow slow or rapidly and can spread to other parts of the body, solid tumors (mass or a lump)
is a mass formed in the bone or tissue, or liquid tumors (Leukemia) affects the blood, bone marrow, or lymphatic system
(National Cancer Institute, 2021).
, Pathophysiology
When normal, healthy cells grow old or damage they die, this will signal the body to use a process called cell
division to grow and divide new normal and healthy cells to replace them (National Cancer Institute, 2021). However
cancer is when those old or damaged cells undergo cell division and start multiplying and can metastasize (spread from
its original location to other parts of the body) to other organs and tissues in the body (National Cancer Institute, 2021).
Clinical Manifestations
Signs and Symptoms of cancer varies by its type and location, but it includes (Mayo Clinic , 2022);
● Fatigue
● Lump or area of thickening that can be felt under the skin
● Weight changes, including unintended loss or gain
● Skin changes, such as yellowing, darkening or redness of the skin, sores that won't heal, or changes
to existing moles
● Changes in bowel or bladder habits
● Persistent cough or trouble breathing
● Difficulty swallowing
● Hoarseness
● Persistent indigestion or discomfort after eating
● Persistent, unexplained muscle or joint pain
● Persistent, unexplained fevers or night sweats
● Unexplained bleeding or bruising
Diagnostic Methods
Cancer can be diagnosed by different types of tests such as blood tests that look at the complete blood count,
blood protein, or tumor markers (Cancer: Symptoms, Stages, Types & What It Is, n.d.). Genetic testing can be done to
determine inherited forms of cancers (Cancer: Symptoms, Stages, Types & What It Is, n.d.). Imaging tests such as CT
scans, MRI, Ultrasound or Iodine Metaiodobenzylguanidine can also be conducted and it creates a detailed picture of
the body to help identify tumours, their size, shape, and location (Cancer: Symptoms, Stages, Types & What It Is, n.d.).
