Part 1: Grammar in IELTS — Why It Matters
Grammar is one of the four equally weighted criteria assessed in both IELTS Writing and
Speaking. In Writing it is called Grammatical Range and Accuracy — in Speaking it is called
Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Both assess the SAME two things: the RANGE of
structures you use, and the ACCURACY with which you use them.

and flexible.
💡 Exam Tip
Grammar Range matters as much as Grammar Accuracy. Using only simple, correct
sentences will cap you at around Band 6. To reach Band 7, 8, or 9, you MUST
demonstrate a variety of sentence structures — even if it means occasionally making a
minor error on a complex structure. Examiners reward ambition.
📐 Grammar Rule
The Golden Rule: In every paragraph of your IELTS Writing, aim to use at least ONE
complex sentence structure alongside your simpler sentences. In Speaking,
demonstrate range by naturally using conditionals, relative clauses, and modal verbs
across your answers.
