Metabolism The total chemical activity within an
organism. Chemical activity is the sum of
all anabolic and catabolic processes. The
energy required to perform these
reactions is obtained through respiration.
Anabolic pathways Synthesize important chemical building
blocks (uses energy).
Catabolic Pathways Break molecules down (releasing
energy). Can sometimes occur
spontaneously, but often have an energy
barrier that they have to overcome first
(catalyzed by enzymes)
, Metabolic Rate The rate at which metabolic processes
occur. Can be measured by measuring
oxygen consumption.
How temperature affects In general, enzyme activity increases with
enzyme activity increased temperature. However, once
the temperature reaches a certain level,
the enzyme is denatured and the reaction
rate drops quickly.
Homeothermic Organisms Animals (such as mammals or birds) that
expend energy to maintain a constant
body temperature. Requires more energy,
but less dependent on external
environment. They also generate their
own heat and, therefore, are also
endotherms.
In cooler temps, endotherms have a
higher metabolic rate, as they have to use
energy to maintain heat. In the thermal
neutral zone, it's metabolic rate
decreases, but as the temp increases
more, the metabolic rate increases once
again in order to keep the organism cool
