, QUESTION 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
What is abnormal psychology? It is important to consider what it meant by the
word ‘abnormal’ in order to understand abnormal psychology. The definition appears
clear on the surface; abnormal means something that is beyond the ordinary. Imagine you
are in the coffee shop, you order your drink, you pick up your drink, and then you sit and
sip it quietly. In another word, it’s a pretty normal afternoon in a café. What if someone
cut everyone else’s line? Or what if someone start yelling nonsense words? Would you
still consider it a normal afternoon? According to American Psychological Association
(2020), the term abnormal psychology is a psychology division committed to the
research, evaluation, treatment, and prevention of maladaptive behavior. What is known
as the normal curve can be followed by several human behaviors. Looking at this bell-
shaped curve, most people are clustered around the curve’s higher point, which is known
as the average. The ‘abnormal’ may be known to the people who fell really far at either

larger mental illness or psychopathology.
Think about the lady at the coffee shop, yelling out nonsense words, why would
anyone do that? What’s wrong with her? There are two theories what causes abnormality;
somatogenic theory and psychogenic theory. Somatogenic theory states abnormality is

something wrong with her brain, perhaps she has damage on the left side of her brain
which cause language disorder, or maybe she has damage at the bottom part of her brain
which make people do thing that is socially inappropriate. Either way, somatogenic
theory explain abnormal in term of physical causes. A such, somatogenic abnormality
often focuses on using drug, surgery, or other physical therapies to treat psychological
disorder. Compare to that, which is psychogenic theory says abnormality stems from
