Definition
Newborn care refers to the essential care and management given to a baby immediately after
birth and during the neonatal period (the first 28 days of life). The aim is to promote the baby's
health, prevent complications, and ensure proper growth and development.
Objectives of Newborn Care
1. To ensure the baby establishes breathing after birth.
2. To maintain the baby's body temperature.
3. To prevent infection.
4. To encourage early breastfeeding.
5. To identify and manage abnormalities promptly.
6. To promote growth and development.
7. To reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality.
Immediate Care of the Newborn
1. Receive the Baby Safely
Receive the baby with warm, clean towels and handle gently.
2. Establish Breathing
Ensure the airway is clear and observe for spontaneous breathing and crying.
3. Dry the Baby
Dry the baby immediately to prevent heat loss.
4. Maintain Warmth
Provide skin-to-skin contact with the mother and cover the baby adequately.
5. Clamp and Cut the Umbilical Cord
Clamp the cord using sterile equipment and cut it safely.
6. Assess the Baby
Carry out a quick assessment of colour, respiration, muscle tone, and heart rate.
