Isotope - ANS-Atoms of an element with the same number of protons but different
numbers of neutrons.
Relative Isotopic Mass - ANS-The mass of an atom of an isotope of an element relative
to 1/12th the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Relative Atomic Mass - ANS-The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element
relative to 1/12th the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Relative Molecular Mass - ANS-The mass of a molecule of a compound relative to
1/12th the mass of an atom of Carbon-12.
Water of Crystallisation - ANS-The water molecules that make up part of the crystal
structure of a solid.
Mole - ANS-The amount of substance which contains as many particles as there are
atoms in exactly 12g of Carbon-12.
Empirical Formula - ANS-The whole number ratio of atoms of each element in a
compound.
Molecular Formula - ANS-The actual number of atoms of each element in a compound
Standard Solution - ANS-When one mole of compound is dissolved in a solvent (usually
water) to make 1dm^3 of solution and has a concentration of 1moldm^3.
Acid - ANS-A proton, H+, donor.
Base - ANS-A proton, H+, donor.
Salt - ANS-When the acidic H+ ion of an acid is replaced by a positive ion such as a
metal ion or the ammonium ion.
First Ionisation Energy - ANS-The energy required to remove one electron from one
mole of atoms in the gaseous state., The energy required to remove one electron from

each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions.
Ionic Bond - ANS-The electrostatic force of attraction between an anion and a cation
Covalent Bond - ANS-Atoms that share a pair of electrons, one electron being
contributed by the other., A chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons
between atoms in a molecule
Dative Covalent Bond - ANS-A shared pair of electrons which has been provided by one
of the bonding atoms only.
Metallic Bond - ANS-The electro static attraction between positive metal ions and
delocalised electrons.
Lone Pair - ANS-Pairs of electrons not involved with bonding
Electronegativity - ANS-The Ability of an atom to attract the bonding electrons in a
covalent bond
Intermolecular Forces - ANS-Forces of attraction that occur between small covalent
molecules
Van der Waals Forces - ANS-A slight attraction that develops between the oppositely
charged regions of nearby molecules
Permanent Dipole-Dipole - ANS-A weak attractive force between permanent dipoles in
neighbouring polar molecules.
Hydrogen bond - ANS-An attraction between an electron deficient H+ on one molecule
and a lone pair of electrons on an O+ or N+ on a different molecule.
Giant Ionic Lattice - ANS-3-D arrangements of positive and negative ions
Giant Metallic Lattice - ANS-3-D arrangement of positive metal ions surrounded by a
'sea' od delocalised electrons
Giant Covalent Lattice - ANS-3-D arrangement of atoms, bonded together by strong
covalent bonds.
