Standard 5B: Health Teaching, Health Literacy, and Health Promotion
This competency emphasizes the PMHNP’s role in ensuring that clients understand their
diagnoses, treatment options, and overall mental health care plan. It includes assessing health
literacy, correcting misinformation, and promoting informed decision-making. PMHNPs must
tailor education to the client’s level of understanding while supporting autonomy and shared
decision-making (American Nurses Association [ANA] et al., 2022).
Standard 5D: Pharmacological/Biological Therapies and Prescriptive Authority
This competency focuses on the PMHNP’s role in safely prescribing and managing
psychopharmacologic treatments. It includes understanding medication mechanisms,
monitoring for side effects and interactions, and evaluating treatment effectiveness over time.
Prescriptive authority also requires adherence to evidence-based guidelines and state
regulations to ensure safe and effective care (ANA et al., 2022).
