DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
• They give essential information
• Who, which and that can be omitted if they don’t function as the subject
• Who/That: people
• Which/That: animals or things
• Where: places
• When: time
• Why: reasons
• Whose: possession
• That: after superlatives
• All that: after all, everything, nothing, something
• What: the thing(s) that
DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES WITH PREPOSITIONS
• Formal style: preposition before whom (people) or which (things)
• Informal style: preposition after the verb or direct object. Who/that (people) or which (things) can be
omitted
NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
• They give additional information
• The relative clause is separated by commas
• The relative pronoun can’t be omitted
• That can’t be used
• Who: people
• Whom: people
• Which: animals or things
• Which: whole of the clause that comes before
• Where: places
