, Course Bundle Description
This bundle provides an overview of key topics about cultural and cross-cultural perspectives in
health. It includes eight weeks of literature reviews, discussions and Q&A on cultural awareness,
and fostering intercultural understanding to operate effectively in a multicultural educational setting
as a health educator.
Includes Case Study Exemplar: Health Education and Intervention Program for Romani
Children (A comprehensive blueprint analyzing healthcare barriers, community outreach, and
targeted intervention strategies for marginalized youth).
Includes Signature Assignment Exemplar: Health Education Guidelines for Multicultural
Populations (A professional framework detailing cultural competency, linguistic adaptation, and
diverse communication strategies in healthcare delivery)
Student Learning Outcomes Study Checklist
SLO 1 (Role of Educator): Can you list three distinct differences in how a health educator
approaches a monocultural vs. a cross-cultural target audience?
SLO 2 (Theory Application): Pick one health behavior theory. How exactly do you adapt its
constructs when designing a program for a minority population?
SLO 3 (Cultural Impact): Give two specific examples of how a community's traditional
practices can directly conflict with—or support—a Western medical intervention.
SLO 4 (Educational Methods): Compare the effectiveness of visual-based storytelling vs.
lecture-style teaching when delivering diabetes education to an immigrant group.
SLO 5 (Culture Assessment): Describe two formal tools or frameworks a health educator can
use to map out a community’s cultural norms before launching a program.
SLO 6 (Communication Impact): What are the potential health consequences if an educator
misinterprets non-verbal communication cues during a workshop?
SLO 7 (Alternative Paradigms): How should a health educator handle a target audience that
heavily relies on holistic or spiritual healing paradigms instead of biomedicine?
SLO 8 (Global Perspective): Name one global health crisis (e.g., infectious disease, climate
migration) and explain how cross-cultural boundaries complicate its resolution.

PLO 3 (Theory Utilization) → Connected to SLO 2: This course teaches you how to critique and
refine standard health theories so they actually work for diverse publics, not just majority
populations.
PLO 4 (Intervention Efficacy) → Connected to SLO 4 & 7: You will learn to evaluate why certain
interventions fail when they ignore alternative health paradigms or use culturally insensitive
teaching methods.
PLO 7 (Target Group Competency) → Connected to SLO 1, 3, & 5: This course is your primary
training ground for demonstrating advanced core competency when working with specific, diverse
target groups.

Cultural Sensitivity: An attitude of respect and awareness that cultural differences and similarities
exist but do not have any value (better or worse, right or wrong).
E
Ethnocentrism: The practice of judging another culture or group by the standards and values of
one’s own culture, sometimes with the belief that one’s own group is inherently superior.
F
