1. Describe the issue in the social sciences that you have selected to investigate. Why is this
issue significant?
Issue: INPATIENT VS OUTPATIENT TREATMENT: Drug abuse is at an all-time high in the
United States. It is one of the greatest social issues and debates across the country, with it
affecting states, politics and financial standing in the US. This topic alone wields a plethora of
m
questions that should be researched and answered. For instance, one of many questions would be
er as
does inpatient drug treatment facilities (where clients are coerced into going to) produce a better
co
treatment outcome than that of its counterpart (which is on a voluntary basis) outpatient
eH w
community-based treatment facilities? How effective can involuntary drug treatment be vs
voluntary drug treatment? What differences are there between the inpatient drug rehabilitation
o.
rs e
centers vs outpatient community-based drug rehabilitation centers? How effective has it been in
ou urc
reducing drug addicted newborns? Which version of treatment has produced more recovered
addicts? What is the financial difference in both treatments? Is one costlier than the other? How
many families are brought together or torn apart by these treatments? Which treatment is more
o
affective in keeping families together when kids are involved? How effective have they been at
reducing the number of drug related deaths? What are their drug testing policies? What happens
aC s
if someone relapses while in treatment?

2. Identify the social science principles that apply to your issue. In other words, which
ed d
principles of social science apply to the issue you selected? All the social principles apply to
ar stu
my research issue.
is
Social institutions: Since drug abuse can affect people of all walks of life from the poor to
Th
the wealthy this often means working class people will have to pay more taxes or donate
money to the private institutions in order to help these people.
sh
Social norms: Unfortunately, in today’s society it has become normal to not only ignore
people who suffer from drug addiction but to also abandon them instead of trying to help
them through such a difficult time. Sadly, this affects the community in a negative way as
more and more drug addicts succumb to their addictions and end up homeless on the streets.
